The Winter Olympics and dreams of gold medals are history. It’s time for new endeavors, and at Yuba College that means that start of a new Tennis season.
Josh Prager coaches both the men’s and women’s tennis teams. He is especially hopeful about his teams’ prospects this year. Last season both teams finished third in their respective divisions. This is Josh’s third year as the head coach at Yuba College. His assistant is a former player at Yuba College, his new bride, Helen Prager.
These teams feature both new and returning faces, and Josh and Helen feel these players promise thrills but hopefully few spills later in the season. Josh believes number 1 seed Kevin Buyse and Diana Montiel have potential to advance far in the upcoming April tournament play in Ojai, California.
So far, the men’s team has played two non-League matches, losing one against Modesto, but winning one over Alameda. League play begins March 5 and, due to the poor condition of on-campus tennis courts, matches will be held at Rancho Cortez in Yuba City.
A tournament to help raise funds for the team’s upcoming trip to Ojai, California will be hosted by the Yuba City Racquet Club March 23 and 24. This fund-raising tournament is open to the community, and Josh and Helen want to encourage all weekend tennis warriors to enter. A portion of the entry fee goes toward funding of the trip.
“Not only is it for a good cause, but it’s a great way to compete with good local talent,” commented Helen Prager.
