Yuba players, coach awarded
Yuba College runningback John West has recently been named to the junior college All – America as well as All -State football teams, and has also accepted a scholarship to play for the University of Hawaii. First year middle linebacker Marc Geyer was also selected to All-State team, and head coach Ted Hoal was named Regional Coach of the Year for guiding the 49ers to thier second straight BVC conference championship and third bowl appearance in four seasons.
Volleyball star to shine in Utah
Yuba College volleyball star Cassie DeHaan has been awarded a full scholarship to continue her volleyball play at Weber State in Utah.Dehaan holds the 49er school record for blocks in a career.
Former Yuba pitcher impresses in debut
In late January, former Yuba College pitcher Kevin Jensen pitched seven innings of shutout baseball for the Loyola Marymount Lions in thier season opener. Jensen gave up only four hits, while striking out four, and giving up one walk while earning the 5-0 victory.
Dragila wins in New York, loses indoor record
Olympic gold medalist and former Yuba College star Stacy Dragila won the women’s pole vaulting event at the 95th annual Melrose Games in New York in January, with a mark of 14-11. Days later, Dragila’s women’s indoor vaulting record was broken by russian Svetlana Feofanova’s leap of 15 feet, 5 1/2 inches. Dragila still holds the women’s outdoor record.
Berry ties personal best for Simpson
Former Marysville High and Yuba College guard Scott Berry matched a personal best when he scored 48 points for Simpson College during a Natinoal Christian College Athletic Association game against Puget Sound on February 15.
Newest Inductees to Yuba Hall of Fame
On February 23, the Yuba College Athletic Hall of Fame grew by five individuals, and one of the best men’s basketball teams the school has ever produced during the 4th annual ceremony held at the Peach Tree Golf & Country Club. The inductees included 18-year basketball coach and 10-year athletics director Joe McCarron, who coached three teams to conference titles (1972, 1984, and 1986); Volleyball star Jill Evarts Hitchcock (1989-90), who set 5 team records; All-American junior college halfback Dan Panciano (1977-78); All-American baseball player Ed Schwartz (1961-62); John Wotawa,Yuba decathlete (1982-83); and the 1959-60 basketball team was inducted as well, who finished 19-6.
