49ers are swinging for the fences

Spring is just around the corner and just in the nick of time too. After what felt like two years of winter capped off with those strange snow flurries. Yuba College students are looking for any sign of spring. They can look no further than their own baseball team.

The 49ers have exploded out of the gates with a 6 and 2 record. The 49ers are hoping to continue their fast start in what they hope is a championship season. The very well experienced head coach and former professional player (Montreal Expos and Los Angels Dodgers) Tim Gloyd leads the team into what he hopes will be a very productive season.”We always shoot for the playoffs,” Gloyd added. “That is the ultimate goal for every season.”

Playoffs won’t come very easy this season with what looks to be a very tough Bay Valley Conference.

“Sacramento City, American River, Consumnes River, Delta and Santa Rosa won’t make it easy on us,” Gloyd added. “But I think we have a good group this year who should compete every game.”

Right Fielder Rudy Crisolo 18, from Woodland and Pitcher Trevor Markwell 19 from Henderson, Nevada both agreed that the level of competition is a major plus.

“The competition is more intense now then it was in high school,” said Rudy. “The game is more exciting and the pace of the game is really fast,” he added.

Trevor, who plans on transferring to UNLV, added, “I think American River will be a tough team to beat this year, but I like our chances.”

Gloyd has coached a number of talented teams over the past few years. In 1988, while coaching at Sacramento State, with a record of 46-14, he took his squad to the championship game, which they eventually lost, in a 12-inning thriller. This team has a lot to live up to, but Gloyd is confident of their abilities.

“Everybody wants to be here and you can tell they all want to get better,” Gloyd added. “It’s not like in high school, when you play just because your friends play. We’re all here to get better and hopefully get deep into the playoffs.”
