The Yuba College baseball team is still on its way to win the BVC championship. The team has been winning continuously since its loss against Solano on April 12.
The team has won six games in a row, and it seems like they are on a roll to take it home this year. As of May 2, Yuba College is standing in second place with an overall record of 25-14 and in the conference with 16 wins and 9 losses.
In the game against Laney College on April 17, Yuba tied for second with Marin. The 49’ers were victorious after defeating Laney College 6-5. The athletes that stood out the most were Aaron Lower, who scored the winning run, and Nick Armocido, who pitched for five innings while striking out four and only allowing four hits.
A sure spot in the BVC conference was earned when Yuba won over Napa on April 19 and when the Mariners lost to Los Medanos on Thursday April 19. Yuba pulled a 7-5 triumph against host Napa and moved to second place after Solano.
In the game against Napa, Dan Miller pitched eight innings and Gauldin took over after that. Miller threw 119 pitches, the most a guy threw for Yuba in five years.
Coach Tim Gloyd was really impressed with him. “He was very good,” Gloyd said. Miller had an exciting game after he had hit a batter, struck out nine, and allowed eight hits. It was a really close game from beginning to end. Yuba was tight 2-2 until the top of fifth inning, and 5-5 in the bottom of sixth.
On April 26, Yuba killed Los Medanos and came up victorious 8-2. This was Yuba’s sixth win in a row. Miller stood out this game also. He had pitched for straight seven innings. Miller walked five guys and struck out six. The coach said that his pitches were pretty wild and the opponents had trouble hitting them. After Miller was done, Nick Gauldin came out and shut Los Medanos down, while allowing just one hit.
Yuba’s defense recovered enormously, which is proven in their latest wins. Gloyd said that the middle infielders Billy Thomas and Aaron Lowe stepped their game up big time. The defense is now helping the offense, and together they are winning games.
On April 28 Yuba won its seventh consecutive game against host Mendocino, with a score of 4-3. Yuba was trailing by two points in the fourth, but in fifth and sixth they managed to score and tie the game 3-3. Gauldin again had managed to pitch seven innings before Jeff Oliver finally replaced him. The one person who saved the game was Eric Burns. With runners in position to score, he caught a fly ball to the deep left center field, which ended the game and any chances of scoring.
Let’s hope the 49’ers keep doing their best and bring home a title.
