Throughout the year Yuba College cross-country runners continued to improve on their performances, breaking personal best times often. Steven Schenck and Zack Stuller broke into the Yuba college all-time top 10 list and also made the top 10 list for the 5K at the John Orognen meet earlier this season.
Steven Schenck and Zack Stuller set the pace for the men’s team early on this season with strong performances in every event, eventually leading to the men’s team qualifying for the Northern California regional championships after taking ninth place at Bay Valley cross-country championships.
Leading the way for the Women’s Team were Raquel Lopez, Erika Ayala, Jennifer Horton and Debra Terry. Raquel Lopez showed her strength and represented the 49ers at the Northern California regional championships after placing 26 at the Bay Valley cross-country championships.
To qualify from the Northern California Meet to the State Championships, teams must place within the top 14 of 22 teams, or runners must place within the top 30 individual competitors.Strong performances at the Northern California regional championships by Schenck and Lopez assured them qualifying positions at the state cross-country championships. Raquel Lopez finished 126 with a time of 22:23. Steven Schenck finished 155 with a time of 23:00 out of 220 runners who qualified from both the Northern and Southern California regional championships. With many of Yuba’s front runners expected to return next year coach Nick Vogt should field a formidable threat next year.
Many of the runners will be competing in Yuba’s track and field competition this spring and their efforts on the cross-country courses will most certainly improve their performances there as well.
