Yuba’s baseball team started strong this season. They won a lot of games against tough opponents, but they also lost some games that they should have won. The team is currently in third place, falling behind Marin in the Bay Valley Conference.
“We are not looking to finish second,” Coach Gloyd said. “We want to win Conference.”
Gloyd’s positive influence shines through his team. He will settle for nothing but the best. And with a team like the 49ers, it is possible.
The team has really come together as a cohesive unit, and they have improved throughout the season.
“Our offence has been big all year,” Ryan Lane, an in-fielder, said. “You can tell by the stats. Everyone’s hitting over .300.” Lane is the current offense point leader, with a .407 average.
But the team isn’t doing as well defensively. When the 49ers are on defense, it seems as if the team spirit fades away. The guys are not as talkative and that might be part of the problem: communication. A great offence is a good defense.
“We really need to step up defensively,” Lane said. “Basically, that’s what it’s going to take for us to win.”
In the game against Marin College, on April 3, Yuba lost 6-5.
“This was a real tough look for us,” Coach Gloyd said, referring to the Marin game. The 49ers controlled all the actions, and it seemed like they were going to add another win to their record, until the end of the ninth ending. With a 5-1 lead, the 49ers seemed like they were going to pull it off, but at the end of the ninth ending Marin scored 5 more points. Again, Yuba’s defense was lacking.
“That game on Tuesday just killed us,” Gloyd said. “That’s still all I think about. I don’t think about anything else but how we lost that game.”
“We were in complete control in that game,” Gloyd continued. “We beat them up, and then they score five.” Yuba’s 49ers lost again to Marin, 6-3, on April 5.
However, faced with Solano, the first placeholder team in the BVC, on April 10, the 49ers performed great under pressure. They won the game against the host, with a shining 13-9 score.
“We still have a shot,” Gloyd said, referring to the BVC conference title. Now Solano has to play Marin, and Yuba will host Solano, which hopefully will better their chances at getting the title.
In the win against Solano, Ryan Lane sent the ball out of the park and scored a 3-run homerun, putting Yuba in the lead with 10-4. Another key player was Jason Hamel, an infielder who hit a double. Josh Gauldin piched for the first five innings and Dan Miller took over the last four.
Both pitchers contributed greatly to the win.
