Did you know that we have a class here at Yuba College where you can be on an editorial board for a literary journal?
Flumes is a literary journal run by Yuba College’s advanced creative writing class, English 31B. Kiara Koenig, an English professor here, was given the opportunity to rewrite English 31B when she came to teach here and turned it into an editing and publishing class. When asked what inspired her to create Flumes she said that before, when she taught at Butte, she had created a literary arts club. There they did a lot of writing contests and had always talked of creating a literary journal. However, they weren’t ever able to get it off the ground. So, when she was given the opportunity here, she took it.
When Professor Koenig was a student at Chico she worked and published on Watershed Review, Chico State’s online literary publication and has received a certificate for literary journalism. Now, her job when it comes to Flumes is to give a sense of what it has been, letting the current editors know what they are coming into. She stated that she is like their coach, supporting and driving the team forward, figuring out what the best work is, and helping the students develop an aesthetic, but letting the students do all the work for the journal.
Something Professor Koenig wanted people to know about Flumes was that even though it is a student-edited journal, they publish the best that they get, they have even published award winning authors. They want it to be as professional as they can make it so that the editors can be proud and have something they can say they have been apart of, and so the authors feel that their work has been given justice.
When she was asked what her favorite part about Flumes was, she shared her two favorite moments. One, getting to talk about the submissions as an editorial board, especially when one person falls in love with a piece that others are unsure of and they get to show the others what they saw in the piece. The second was when they publish the journal, it’s something that is going into the real world. They get feedback from readers, and just get to enjoy their accomplishment.
Professor Koenig encourages anyone and everyone to submit. This semester they are taking Poetry, Creative Nonfiction, Fiction, Scripts, as well as Visual Art and Photography. Hi, I’m Meloni Mitchell, I am the President of the Journalism Club and one of the two editors for our paper. This is my forth semester at Yuba College, but I have had a love for writing since the sixth grade. I enjoy writing anything from essays and articles to poetry and short stories, and I really enjoy editing all forms of writing. However, my favorite form of writing would be poetry.
