A New President Arrives

Yuba College has a new president. G.H. Javaheripour arrives at Yuba College with over 38 years of experience in higher education. He spent the last six and a half years at Victor Valley College before coming here.

Javaheripour has experience with classified work study programs and middle management direction. He is faced with the challenge of integrating new programs into the Yuba College system while keeping the existing faculty, administration, and personnel motivated and happy in the course of their daily work.

“I’m still learning about people, their relationships and the tasks to do their jobs,” he said. “Relationships are what help people with collaboration from the top. So, there is a screening process. I would like people to understand ‘the flavor of the process.’”

Yuba College is fortunate to have a quality staff committed to reaching long term goals and an understanding of the need for successful collaboration and streamlined system processing, he said.

They should adapt to President Javaheripour’s direct personality and relationship communication skills very well. Success, as always, depends on recognition of the importance of student development and participation.

According to Javaheripour, we must “figure out a way to provide better service by supporting our students through the education process.”

Also, community involvement is crucial for financial benefit and resource growth potential for the students, the college and the community itself. Several important factors can contribute to the realization of growth and the achievement of this goal.

Increased enrollment is the most important. A college receives more funding and is able to offer more classes when enrollment meets the standard for peak efficiency.

A successful and profitable college creates fiscal growth within its own community which can open up the job market. Community resources as a whole then benefit.

In order to create new programs to meet community needs, Javaheripour agrees that “additional resources are needed and we must identify dollars and resources to expand programs.”

Since Yuba College enrolls about forty percent of its students in career and tech programs, many of whom fill jobs in the local community after graduation, it becomes more important to facilitate their success by providing a full curriculum of program study and encouraging them to take responsibility for their own advancement.

Javaheripour said, “Our goal is to help students promote internal success, and then responsibility over external influences which affect their future; success then becomes their own.”

Full time students wishing to become a police officer must complete three levels of study to be accepted into the police academy. Level 1 courses are necessary to complete transfer as a law enforcement college graduate. Yuba College has course availability for all three levels.

A Yuba College education can also allow students graduating to become an X-ray technician, with a basic radiology curriculum to help prepare for a better job. We offer radiology classes right here on campus.  Collaboration with the other colleges in our system is the key. Programs that are not on campus here are still available in our system.

Yuba College is in the process of collaboration with sister colleges in Sierra, Shasta, and Los Rios for adjunct programs to give students opportunity to complete more classes that apply to the curriculum at the community college level, whereas in the past many of them had to be completed at four year universities.

Yuba College can now offer Level 1 courses for completion at community college without the necessity to attend a four year university. The trick is to streamline the system by providing “digital modality” within the system as a whole to avoid duplicating collaboration between colleges.

Digital modality provides commonality between systems through proper programming. By implementing proper interpersonal communication for systems and personnel, we can create a higher level of success by decreasing the workload.

Future success for students in the workplace will result by provision of collaborative resources and their implementation. Yuba College and the local community will benefit by service to the students and each other.
