Abortion. The very word stirs up controversy. However the only controversy I see is why it’s legality is even an issue.
You can call it a choice or you can call it murder. Yet you certainly cannot call it medicine; of the 3,000 abortions that will take place today, virtually every one will be done for non-medical reasons, on perfectly healthy women. I might also add that virtually none of these abortions will be preformed on women who were pregnant due to rape or incest.
I would also like to remind everyone that just because something is legal doesn’t mean it’s right. Yes, abortion is a constitutional right. But have we forgotten that at one time the Supreme Court ruled that having slaves was also a constitutional right?
Women today say, “It’s my body” in the same way that slave owners defended that slaves were their “property.” We have corrected the latter but for some reason refrain to give equality for our children. I must say as a former fetus, I support equality for the unborn as well as the born.
Consider this: there are two children both 24 weeks old. One was born after 24 weeks in the womb; the other was aborted after 24 weeks in the womb. The one that was born lives under the protection of the Bill of Rights, while the aborted child was executed under the state-sanctioned choice of its mother. One child is given the rights of personhood while the other is killed with impunity. One is called “baby” while the other is called a “product of conception.” The only real thing that separates them is the fact that one was wanted and one was not. This is the insanity of abortion. This is the insanity of “choice.”
As a young girl myself, I have known dozens of girls that were faced with this “choice.” I personally was faced with this choice. And I can say that literally every reason these girls that I personally knew, gave in deciding if she should or shouldn’t carry the pregnancy to term was a selfish one. I can say this because when at 18 years old the abortion option was looking pretty darn good to me too, all my reasons were selfish.
I wanted to be older. I wanted to be married. I wanted to be “financially secure”. I wanted to go to school. Sure, those don’t sound like selfish choices until you see that they are being used as the deciding factors in choosing life or death for a child who didn’t even ask to be put into the situation or even ask to have you as a parent.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m all for choices. Condoms, birth control, the shot, diaphragms, even abstinence; these are all great choices. However I think it would be safe to say today women are using abortion as simply another form of birth control. Have you taken a Health or Human Sexuality class on campus? Well, if you do, you will see on the syllabus that there is a section on abortion. It will read like this: Contraception (and abortion)
Hmmm. What exactly is this insinuating? I am still trying to figure out what abortion has to do with my sexuality and health? Unless the health professor wants to bring up the risks involved with an abortion, how is covering the methods of abortion a part of health? It seems to imply that abortion is a from of contraception. Abortion is just a way to get rid of the product of conception.
Here’s a newsflash. Adoption is also a way for conception to end. Why doesn’t the syllabus read: Contraception (and abortion and adoption). Sure perhaps you will defend that abortion is being taught because it’s a legal choice, but adoption is a legal choice as well. Why aren’t both being taught?
It’s easy to shrug abortion off as a choice. Or to say, “Well, personally I wouldn’t have an abortion, but I support a woman’s right to an abortion.”
Would you ever say, “Well I personally wouldn’t own a slave, but I support a man’s right to own a slave.” Or how about “I personally don’t support what happened in the Holocaust, but I do support the Nazi’s right to kill a Jew.”
Does this make any sense? It is easy to turn the other way when you don’t see the ugly side of abortion. When you don’t have to look at all the aborted babies or watch an ultrasound of the womb while an abortion is taking place. To see the infant content, sucking on it’s thumb before the abortionist dilates the woman and inserts the cannula and begins to suction up the infant. You can watch as the infant rears away from this weapon of mass destruction and opens it’s tiny mouth in a silent scream.
I suppose it is an easy choice when you are not the one being chosen.
