The Women’s soccer season has hit its half way point and conference games have just begun. The team is now 11-0 overall and 3-0 conference allowing only one goal in last 11 games. Key games of the season so far have been the game vs. Cerritos College last month, and the recent game against Solano College.
Cerritos College was by far the hardest game the team has played this year. Yuba College is currently the only team to have bested them this year in the 12 games they have played this season.
The match against Solano College however was a different story. It seems as if with every game played the team is slowly picking up speed and steamroll all who stand in their path. The game vs. Solano was expected to be a tough one for the team but ended up being a walk in the park. “We were on fire today. That was our best game of the season,” said Coach Jason Spain.
The game started off slow with no real advancements for either side for 20 minutes. Then within five minutes Yuba scored three goals. With each goal scored, the hope of any chance of winning began to fade for Solano. Nearing the end of the half another goal was headed in minutes before the whistle blew.
The players were cheered on by the men’s team who were on the sidelines putting on a show that was nearly as entertaining as the game. They swung around their shirts above their head and chanting, “Ole, Ole, Ole!,” ending with a “Chola!”
Dominic Brooks, a forward for the men’s team was the most outspoken of the bunch shouting, “And you’re gone!,” after every time one of the women broke away from a defender and headed towards the goal.
“Zero, zero girls, zero, zero,” said the teams Co-captain and goal-keeper Emily Barrett at the start of the second half. And with that the team went on to score another three goals in the second half, as if they were sealing Solano’s fate for the second time. They play Yuba again later this month. The aggressiveness was shown in every run whether it was the starters on the field or the second string. “I went into this game expecting a lot of shots but ended up being pretty bored back there,” said Goal-keeper Barrett.
Forwards Chandlar Davis, Kami Kapaku, and Noelani Bio play a big role in the success of the team. “We work pretty well together combined. We pretty much tore their backline apart,” said Kami Kapaku after the Solano game when asked about the chemistry between the trio.
Kami Kapaku currently leads the team in points with seven assists and six goals. Chandlar Davis is next with two assists and eight goals. With Noelani Bio close behind with one assist and five goals.
With the season narrowing down the Women’s soccer team is, with every game they play, living up to every boast and claim the coach and the players have made since the beginning of the season.
They are more than the real deal. They are the ultimate combination of determination and skill that forces one to get energized just in their company. They are well on their way to achieve exactly what they set out to do this year. Which can be simply stated in two words: Final Four.
