Many people do not know what the Associated Students of Yuba College is or does. Also known as the ASYC, it is the student council elected to provide educational and social programs for the student body, Yuba College’s student government.
The council passes out surveys to learn what the students want to see on campus and plan activities during the semester.
This semester one of the big projects the ASYC is planning to fund is the Commencement Breakfast. This breakfast is the morning of graduation to encourage students who are graduating to be on campus for practice.
Another project was the March in March, during which students from across the state marched on the state capitol to both demonstrate and protest new tuition costs, among other things.
On March 15, students let their state representatives know how important their education is.
Before the march, ASYC President Monica Kurowski said, “The council is working with the college to send a representative to the state capitol on March fifth.”
Also in March, the ASYC is going to hold a St. Patrick’s Day sale on March 16 with high hopes of selling many St. Patrick’s Day treats and Pinch Protectors. The ASYC has high hopes for this sale because of its great success at the Club Day Valentine’s Day sale.
The ASYC has also agreed to donate some money from their funds to the Crossing Borders, Building Bridges foundation, in order to help continue the work they are doing. Crossing Borders, Building Bridges is an organization on campus that provides educational forums and seminars on topics ranging from religion to music.
In May, the ASYC will hold elections for the council seats of the next academic year. The offices that are open are President, Vice President, Secretary, Business Director, Activities Director Communications Director and one Senator per 1,000 students at Marysville and Yuba/Sutter locations.
In order to be nominated for an ASYC chair, students must file a petition in the Campus Life office, located in Osuna Hall, during the nomination period, which should be the third week of April.
The applicant needs to submit his or her name, social security and Student I.D. number, photograph, name of the position wanted and a petition signed by five currently enrolled student body members who wish to nominate the candidate for the office.
Campus Life will determine the eligibility of all persons desiring to run before the election.
The President and Vice President must have competed 12 units in order to run for office. The President, Vice President, Secretary and Business Director must be enrolled in 12 units at the time they assume office and may not drop under nine unites during their terms.
It is not mandatory that any other elective or appointed members of the council have prior college units. However, they must be enrolled in at least nine units to run for, or be appointed to, office and may not drop below six units during their term in office.
The names of all eligible nominees will be posted on campus bulletin boards and in the Student Bulletin as the “Official List of Candidates” one week before election.Installation of elected officers will take place on campus prior to June 1.
