There are so many great locally owned restaurants in our area that are secretly tucked away and difficult to notice while you scurry about your business from day to day. Once in a while you may discover one of these restaurants, but sometimes you are leery of trying something new. You may be wonder about the prices, the atmosphere, the service or the taste of the food.
I have been frequenting a small, locally owned restaurant that I happened to find while walking down Plumas street for a year or so now.
Sopa Thai Cuisine, located at on Plumas street in Yuba City, is one of my favorite places to eat. The authentic atmosphere is so interesting. When you walk in the door, the first thing you notice is the furniture and decorations on the walls that portray traditional Thai culture. To your left there are steps leading to a private dining area known as the authentic section. The seating in the authentic section is on a raised floor with pillows on either side of you. Sitting up there almost makes you forget that you are in Yuba City and not in Thailand.
To your left is the bar where you can eat your dinner and have a beer while conversing with the employees, or watching sports on the television. You can’t miss the dining area with napkins folded, in an origami fashion, to look like a rose, or a swan, and the beautiful centerpieces with candles and sometimes a live bamboo. And, in summer, sitting on the patio is a fun way to eat and enjoy the scenery of historic downtown Yuba City.Of course, the best thing about a restaurant is its food. From curry soup to fried rice, all the food is as authentic and delicious as you can get. The owner and all the cooks are all from Thailand, so the food from Sopa Thai Cuisine is exactly what the locals of Thailand would eat. You can order your food at deferent levels of spicy, which means for me I can order my food mild, but if you like spicy food you can order it extra spicy.
The only negative thing I have to say about Sopa Thai Cuisine is that the food is on the pricey side. For example, for my husband and me to have a nice dinner together, we usually pay around $40. Because of the price I have always referred to Sopa Thai Cuisine’s food as “date food.”
It is pricey enough for your date to know that you really like him or her and worth the cost, but it is not so expensive to make you go completely broke. The plate sizes are well worth the price, and the saying “you get what you pay for” is definitely applicable. The portions of food are well worth the price. Trust me, you won’t go home hungry.
In my opinion Sopa Thai Cuisine has the nicest staff, best atmosphere and tastiest food of any local restaurant. I give it two thumbs up!
