Yuba College men’s baseball team hosted Sierra College Tuesday afternoon, March 8, losing 15-6.
The left-handed Will Meier pitched 5 innings, quieting Sierra’s bats giving up only two runs on four hits.
Although Meier’s control was sporadic, walking five and hitting two batsmen – he was able to get out of two tough jams with a 4-6-3 double-play in the first inning and a 6-4-3 double-play in the third inning.
Yuba shortstop Gino Gellepes went 3-4 and walking once, Darren Deweese went 3-4 in the leadoff spot for Yuba Coach Tim Gloyd.
The 49ers (4-8, 0-2) matched Sierra’s two-run top-half of the first inning with a Deweese single and a perfectly executed hit-and-run by Gellepes, who slapped the ball toward the hole in between first and second base.
Charles Madden smoked the ball to the left-center gap driving in two runs. Madden finished the game strong going 2-4 with 4 RBI’s.
Yuba’s bats struck again in the bottom of the third inning scoring a run on a Madden line drive single to centerfield.
In Sierra’s top-half of the fifth inning, a bunt single nearly turned disastrous when Deweese had a throwing error attempting to catch the runner at first base sleeping. The arrant throw rolled down the right field line in foul territory and the Sierra base runner rounded second easily, as the runner heading to third in an attempt to challenge the arm of Yuba’s first baseman Charles Madden – Madden, from deep right field foul territory, threw an amazing one-hop seed nailing the runner at third.
The 49ers had a 5-3 lead going into the top-half of the seventh inning. Sierra’s bats were alive and well and Yuba relief pitchers Ryan Robertson, Jason Boberg and Eric Melendez felt their wraths giving up a combined 11-runs in four innings.
