The 49ers baseball team has had a rough season, battling the elements with many of their games being postponed or canceled due to the relentless rain. The 49ers began the baseball season off right, dominating the field with 7 straight landslide wins, but the streak was broken mid-February with a 2-7 loss in their third face-off with Skyline College. It seems the weather has had it in for our 49ers as they went back and fourth between domination and disappointment on the field.
Head baseball coach Tim Gloyd reported to the Appeal-Democrat on April 4 that the constant bad weather is bringing down the morale of his team. “We haven’t been on our field in a month if we’re not playing a game,” he confessed. “It’s hurt us bad. We can’t get into any rhythm, and we can’t get out and practice.”
Gloyd continued to share his frustration with this season’s bad fortune. “I had my guys on a bus (recently), and we made it all the way out to Colusa on our way to Mendocino, but around 11:30 a.m. we got the call that it was going to be canceled,” Gloyd divulged. “You could just hear the groan go up when the phone rang. By the time they got back (to Yuba), school was over, and now they’ll have to miss more classes later on.”
Our boys have won only 15 out of the 27 games played so far, and the future isn’t looking too bright for them either. “Their (batting) averages aren’t where they’re supposed to be, and all of a sudden that Div. I scholarship slips to a Div. II scholarship,” Gloyd reported to the Appeal. “It’s not fair to the kids.”
