With two victories this weekend against Skyline college (12-2, 4-2, 2-7), the 49er Baseball team is off to a great start. Tim Gloyd, the head coach, has led the team for eight years making this season his ninth season coaching.
The 49er victory over College of Siskiyous, in a double header game, that took place on January 27th, those games resulting scores are 7-1 and 12-3. This victory started the 49er’s season with a bang.
Their season leads on with victories over: Barstow College on February 3-4 resulting scores of 13-4, 12-7, and 15-5, and the weekend of February 11th which resulted in a Yuba-Skyline split on the afternoon of the 11th.
In the season opener against College of Siskiyous, sophomores Frank Avilla, Steve Shaver and AJ Russo “managed notable performances as did freshmen Billy Thomas and Ruben Cardenas,” As quoted from the 49er Baseball Web site.
Starting the season off with a 2-0 record did not go to the baseball team’s head. Opening a 3-game series with Barstow College over the first weekend in February, Ryan Zaft, Pitcher, led the team for 7 innings, walked no batters and allowed his first run of the season.
Cameron Pembroke, Ryan Maskovich, Matt Miller, and Deno Gellepes, batters 6-9, respectively, had 10 hits, 10 RBI’s, and 5 runs scored. Steve Shaver, a sophomore outfielder, earned his keep on the team by going 2 for 3 with a double and triple, 3 RBI’s, a stolen base, and a run scored.
In their most recent series, playing against Skyline College for 3 games the weekend of February 10th, the 49ers lost their first game, game three of three.
The first game of the three game series the 49er’s won, 12-2; Ryan Zaft and relievers Gary Kenyon and Nick Armocido pitched the game for a combined total of 10 strikeouts.
In the second and third game of the series resulted in a Yuba- Skyline split. As quoted in the Appeal Democrat, Head Coach Tim Gloyd said “I couldn’t be any happier; we’ve got great pitching and great hitting.”
The team roster is as follows: Pitching we have Sophomores Ryan Maskovich, Douglas Hurn, Corey Todhunter, who is also outfield and first base,
Freshmen Jeff Oliver and Steve Shamblin, who is also outfielder and first baseman are both pitching.
Nick Armicdo, Daniel Miller and Daniel Rackley, who is also an outfielder, and Cliff Cleland are the rest of the pitchers.
In the infield there is Deno Gellepes, Arron Lowe, Casey Borcher, and Ryan Lane, who is also an outfielder.
In the outfield there is Ryan Maskovich, Steve Shaver, Matt Miller, and Kevin Brown.
Basemen include Travis Walden, third base, Cameron Pembroke, first base, and Robert Lane third base.
