Bok Kai festival returns to Marysville

April 24, 2002 Staff Leave a Comment

Springtime in Yuba-Sutter brings with it the Bok Kai Parade, a Chinese tradition dating back over 100 years.

The parade honors the ancient water deity Bok Kai in hopes that the valley will be blessed with ample rainfall for a bountiful harvest.

Under the spectacular backdrop of crisp blue skies, interspersed with bright, puffy clouds, hundreds participated in the parade, and thousands gathered in attendance to view the celebration which culminated in the flight of the dragon Luong Kang through the streets of the historic Chinatown district in Marysville.

The weather did not cooperate so well for Bomb Day, although a devoted group gathered near the Silver Dollar Saloon to view the event which signifies the closing of the two-day Bok Kai festivities.Rings are launched into the sky via a large firework, and Chinese males compete to catch them. The rings are believed to bring good luck.
