Broken Records in Football

The 2007/2008 football season is definitely one to remember: records have been shattering everywhere, and not only in the professional league.

In the NFL, the Charger’s Antonio Cromartie got in on the action with a record that could never be broken, only tied, catching the ball just inches from the back of his own end zone and returning for a 109 yard touchdown. Unless the National Football League enlarges the fields to Canadian-sized, this record will stand the test of time.

In college football, University of Hawaii’s Colt Brennan broke over 30 NCAA records, including most touchdown passes in a single season (58), most completions in a half (34), and most yards thrown in a half (416). Brennan has thrown for 5,549 passing yards in his college career, another record, and is considered by most to be the best college quarterback in the nation. Brennan has declared himself eligible for the NFL draft later this year.

However, no other team had broken as many records in the 2007 season than the New England Patriots.

From the beginning of the season, the Patriots showed amazing ability to be the first to go undefeated in the regular season since the 1972 Dolphins. Tom Brady, Patriots quarterback, broke several records, some in the same game. Brady’s records now include most touchdown passes in a single season (31), most career touchdown passes (183), and most touchdown passes in a single season (50). Brady also broke Peyton Manning’s record of 8 straight games with at least 3 touchdown passes, increasing the current to 9.

Tom Brady had to obviously been throwing to someone important to set all of these amazing records and that is where Randy Moss comes in. Patriot’s wide receiver Randy Moss set the record for most touchdown passes received in a single game, at 13.

As a team, the Patriots set the record of the most touchdowns in a single season, beating the 1974 Miami Dolphins while playing against the Miami Dolphins. The Patriots vs. Ravens game set its own record as the most watched program in the history of cable television.

Many sportscasters would say that no matter how great a team’s regular season was, it was null and void if they couldn’t win the Superbowl and we all know how that ended up. The Patriots were beaten by the Giants, who set their own record as the first wild card team to make it to, and win, the Superbowl.

Whether or not you’re a football fan this last season had been amazing to watch. The climactic Superbowl couldn’t have been better if it had been in a movie, with heart-stopping action all the way to the very last second. Makes you wish you had bet on the Giant to win the Superbowl at the very beginning.
