My daily meal routine is often very simple. If I’m hungry in the morning, I eat a small breakfast. I usually avoid lunch during the week because it tends to make me tired in class. But there are those days when I do get very hungry, and I must eat lunch. Often, I’m pressed for time and our campus cafeteria is my only option for a quick meal.
I don’t have too much of a problem with our cafeteria food. Sure it’s not perfect, but I don’t expect a three-dollar lunch to be mouth-watering. The problem I encounter with our cafeteria is the way that it is arranged. I feel our cafeteria needs remodeled to make it easier for people to get their food and drink without knocking into everybody or spilling their drinks on someone’s shoes.
When I do eat in our cafeteria, it usually goes like this: First, I get my tray and stand in line to order my food. At times, depending on how busy the cafeteria is, I can find a place to sit my tray down while I wait. I finally put in my order, and wait for it to be prepared. During this time I usually get elbowed, or elbow others, two or three times.
After getting my food, I go to get my drink. I have no problem finding a cup, but I can never find a place to set my tray while I pour my drink. I find it very difficult to fill my cup while I’m holding my tray, carrying my bag and dodging everyone else who’s trying to get a drink. I could leave my bag at a table, but books are too expensive to leave unattended on the other side of the cafeteria.
Somehow, in a juggling act that I may fall back on if ever my career goals fall through, I eventually get my cup filled.
Next, I must carefully balance my tray, still dodging elbows, while going to whichever cash register is open, trying not to spill my drink since I haven’t made it to the lids– which, for some odd reason, are on the other side of the registers.
Finally, I pay for my meal, get my lid and whatever else I need and find a seat.
This might not sound like too big of an annoyance, but when you’re pressed for time all of these small problems can get very annoying.
I’ve heard that a remodel might be in the near future. Since our cafeteria has only been remodeled once in the last thirty-five years, I can only hope that these rumors are true.I’m sure with the mind power on our campus, along with our school administrators, our student government and Chartwells (the company that leases our cafeteria), our food service can be better.
