In various places around the Yuba College campus there are bulletin boards strategically placed for campus clubs to put up posters to catch the eye of the students who pass by.
But many students barely notice that the bulletin boards are even there, usually because there is nothing but a few “books for sale” papers hanging, and nothing truly interesting is posted. The lack of posters advertising student clubs and activities is the result of hardly any active student clubs on campus.
The clubs that are available for students to attend are the Associated Students of Yuba College, Cunning Culinarians, Automotive Tech, Christians in Action, Latter Day Saints club, Mass communication club, Veterinary Tech club, and the Black Student union. The meetings for these clubs vary.
For more information contact the club president or the club advisor. But if none of these clubs spark your interest, what is there for you to do on campus? How about starting your own club?
There are thirty-one clubs available on our campus that are not currently active. Some of them even have money already raised for the clubs to use. According to Elizabeth Bowman, the Campus Life Coordinator, “All the clubs need to become active is student interest. It has been a very slow year for clubs.”
To start a club all that is needed is about four or five students who are interested and a faculty or staff member to be your advisor. If you cannot find an advisor, the Campus Life office will help you. According to Bowman, “The most important thing is what your interests are. I try to find something that will be interesting to [the students].”
If you are interested in starting a club, see Bowman in the Campus Life Center, located in the 100B building, and pick up the application, called a “Club Charter Packet.” The packet includes everything you will need to start your club.
Starting or joining a club has many benefits. The main thing is interaction with your peers. Clubs are a great way to meet people who have similar interests to you and who go to college with you.
Furthermore, if you want to have a fundraiser for a funeral, or a field trip, or any other event like that, you must join with a club to be able to hold a fundraiser on campus. You do not have to be a “member” of that club, but you do have to have a club helping you to have a fundraiser on campus.
