Yuba College is close to home, not very expensive and provides students with a foundation for their college careers. Because of the convenience of Yuba College, it becomes a starting point for many Yuba-Sutter residents. A sample of Yuba College students reveals their judgments of the college.
Some Yuba College students feel that there is a lot assistance available to help students, while others claim that there is not enough attention directed toward their needs. Allen Cupples, a Yuba College student, said, “Yuba College is good because of the one on one attention that you can get from the teachers.”
In contrast to Cupples, Hari Rai, another Yuba College student, stated, “I had no expectations for Yuba College. So far I am not satisfied with most of the instructors I have had.” Rai went on to say, “There seems to be a lack of enthusiasm. It is like the teachers are just trying to get in their 50 minutes, then get you out.”
Programs such as the Hard Math Café and the College Success Center are characteristics of Yuba College that some students find very functional.
Manjinder Bains, a Yuba College student, stated, “I like the support that a community college gives. The Hard Math Café is one of the programs here at the college that I like a lot.”
Similar to Bains, Andrea Aguilar, a first semester student at Yuba College, said, “This is not as hard as high school because you do things here at your own pace, and there is a lot more help offered.”
The appeal to Yuba College for some is that it is near home and students are still able to see familiar faces.
Allen Leri, a continuing student at Yuba College said that he likes Yuba College because it is the “best place to get an education and find a major without moving away from home.” The familiarity of Yuba College is also what attracts Stephanie Valdez, a first semester student said she liked Yuba because “you still get to be around your old friends.”
The courses that students take may be a factor in determining whether or not Yuba College is right for them.
Paul Jensen, a student at Yuba College, said, “There is no emphasis put into the math/engineering department. These classed are not consistently offered. I might be here four years finishing something that would have taken me two if the classes weren’t only available in certain semesters.”
Yuba College, founded in 1927, has been a beginning for students for over 70 years. With 12,348 current undergraduate students Yuba College will continue to serve the community for years to come.
