Career Day on campus

Over 700 high school juniors from area high schools came to Yuba College on Friday, October 19to gain a perspective on their future education and job experience. Yuba instructors and representatives from many departments set up over 24 tables in hopes to pass on information to students interested in coming to the college upon completion of high school, as well as the many career fields open to them.Beginning at 8:30 a.m., students were offered a continental breakfast and a 45 minute discussion given by a keynote speaker. After the lecture, students were led from the main area in groups by Yuba College volunteers to the given rooms where the lectures were offered. The groups ranged in size from a small handful, to over 30 people. There were two session times, given between 10 a.m. and 11:20 a.m. The day concluded in the center of campus where the different departments had tables set up offering brochures and small freebies for visitors.The California Highway patrol had a table hosted by Public Affairs Officer Frank Gaither, which was especially popular. “It gets me out here to answer questions about my job as a patrolman, and it’s a good way to talk one-on-one with someone who might be interested in the career.” Said Gaither.Another active area was the one occupied by Jennifer Esperante Gunter, one of the keynote speakers of the day, who spoke on motivation and gaining self-direction.” It has been really busy, and a really positive experience,” Gaither concluded.Many students said that it was a learning experience and that they gained useful information from the lectures.”I learned about job interview skills, mainly how important your appearance is and also being on time,” said Sutter High junior Jessica Bowman.”We got a lot of information about our future,” claimed Marysville High junior Aaron Anders.The day concluded with a free lunch of hot dogs and soda, compliments of Yuba College.
