The Writing & Language Development Center (WLDC) has been taking advantage of a scholarship program offered by Townsend Press of New Jersey. Townsend Press created the Townsend Library and Bluford Series to encourage more college students to read books by offering them $100 for reading 10 books in a semester, $200 for reading 20 books and $300 for reading 30 books. The book series contains over thirty titles, including “Dracula,” “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” “Tom Sawyer,” “Little Women” and other classics.
Yuba College student Gary Johnson was introduced to the program last semester when his English class went to the WLDC. “The program is super,” Johnson says, “I read ‘White Fang’ by Jack London and a book named ‘Washington’s Crossing’ that told how the country pulled together in hard times.” He says there is a good variety of books, and he loved it. Johnson read 10 books, and received a check for $100.
Donna Chilton got involved with the program last semester and received $200 for reading 20 books. She said the WLDC helps a lot, and added “the program gets you to read more,” and she “loved every one of the books.”
Susan Garrett, a student who also is assisted by our Disabled Students Program and Services office (DSPS) feels this is “a wonderful program” that helped her a lot. She was able to read 30 books, and received $300. Garrett also says the people in the WLDC have been a great help to her, stating “they take the time to assist me, and I got an ‘A’ in English.”
To qualify for the scholarship program, you must be enrolled in any reading class, or in English 110A, 110B, 105 or 51. The maximum a student can receive is $300, but this means that if you read ten books this semester for $100, you can enter the program again next semester and read another 10, or even 20.
