Chess Club, a New Addition to Yuba College

November 17, 2008 Staff Leave a Comment

In the open area of the 300 Building, protected by the cafeteria’s shade, members of the Chess Club battle against each other. There are two games raging on, while the members who have no board to play on watch and talk chess.

The Chess Club is new this semester as a result of Damian Fussel’s hard work. He is the current President of the Chess Club, and founder.

It is not easy to start a club. Damian said that there is a lot of paper work that goes into it. However, he said it has been fun, especially since he has great officers to help him out this semester. He had tried to start the club in the spring semester, but he lacked proper support.

So far, the club’s only advertisement has been word of mouth, and they have acquired quite a few new members because of it. Since the beginning of the semester, they have grown from two students to over ten.

Damian hopes to have a great chess club someday. If so, then he plans to find colleges and universities that also have a club and compete in tournaments with them.

The chess club is open to anyone who desires to play. Beginners who may not know chess can learn from the other members, who are more then happy to help them learn the basics of the game. Ruth Rogers, a new comer said she is enjoying the club. She has been playing chess for five years.

The club meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. If possible, bring a board and pieces along.
