Dave Walsh & Zero Ground

Zero Ground has been rocking the Yuba-Sutter area for about 6 years now- and they are one of the most prolific bands here in town. Here is what front-man Dave Walsh had to say about it.

Jade: When was Zero Ground formed?

Dave: Zero Ground was formed as the members we have now. About 2004, behind a bar in Yuba City.

J: Which bar?

D: The Town Pump. Used to play a lot of shows there.

J: I thought so! Who were the original members?

D: Originally it was me and Adam, and we were an acoustic band. The drummer and bass player we had upped and quit and that left us with a guitarist and singer. You could do songs like that, you know?

J: Who are the current members of the band?

D: Mr. Adam Cossman (lead and rythym guitar), Joseph Boden on rythym guitar, myself as singer and bassist, and Mr. Eric Bowen as the drummer- and I challenge you to find a better drummer in California!

J: Whose idea was it to start the band?

D: Pretty much we all had the same idea; we all wanted to get together and play music, we just had to find the right musicians. If you play with enough musicians over time, you like some of them more than others naturally because you click better with them; sometimes because they do certain things that other musicians didn’t. Mutually, once everyone started jamming together, it was all everyone’s idea.

J: How many shows has Zero Ground played?

D: In a time span of five and a half years. Let’s average about 40 shows a year. You know, there’s been years that we’ve done three shows a weekend for an entire summer. Lately, we’ve been doing an album so we’ve been doing fewer shows and working on writing songs, starting to record it, so I’m gonna venture a guess and say 200 shows.

 J: What is your favorite venue?

D: My favorite venue. Gosh. The Fat Cat in Modesto might be my favorite; it’s a badass club, big stage, lots of area; The Boardwalk in Sacramento is another favorite.

 J: How many albums have been cut? When is the next one due out?

D: We have one album done- This Life is Proof is the name of it and it’s been out for two-and-a-half to three years now. We just finished the drum tracks for the new one, so this thing should hit by the end of Summer!

J: Are your tracks available on Myspace or iTunes for your fans and listeners?

D: There are plenty of them on Myspace and there’s a SnoCap account on there if you want to pay a buck for them. I would say just listen to them for free- that’s just me; I believe music is for everybody. And you can find us on Wikipedia I’m told.

 J: What are your goals and plans for the near and long-term future?

D: Complete and total domination of Northern California. They’ve been an ornery group thus far and we’re gonna go ahead and put the iron fist on them when this next album comes out. Long term future is nothing short of complete global domination and that’s with or without the consent of the peoples of the world.

 J: Any shows for next month?

D: I’m sure we do, check our Myspace, it is very well updated.

J: What drives you guys to do this?

D: We’ve all collectively decided that working sucks and that playing music is much more fun than working. When it comes right down to it you want to do something you’re good at for a living. You want to get paid for something you do well. That way you don’t show up for work feeling like a loose wheel. So we’ve all kind of agreed that music can hold the future for us.
