Over one hundred people gathered at the Yuba College Library to attend this semester’s Spring Student Art Show, which was held on May 6. “We’re really proud of the students,” said art professor Sarah Sealander. “This is just a way to celebrate.” Refreshments were provided at the event which gives students the opportunity to share their artwork with the community.
“My most important objectives this semester were self-portraits of my son,” said student David Caldon. “One of those endeavors was quite successful.”
Hundreds of art pieces were showcased at the event which included drawings, paintings, sculptures and pottery. “This art show was a particularly nice occasion,” said art professor Glenn Husted. “There was a lot of really cool stuff to exhibit.” The show also had a raffle drawing that gave art students the chance to win various prizes.
“I’ve been taking art classes since I was twelve,” said student Lila Solorzano. “I’m majoring in art and would like to teach art someday.”
Two students were also awarded scholarships at the event in recognition for their artwork from the semester. Julie Hill was awarded the Crocker Kingsley Scholarship and Ricardo Gallardo was awarded the Nicole Bull Scholarship, a local scholarship given to art students by the family of the late Nicole Bull.
The Yuba College Art Department hosts a Student Art Show in the library every semester, and professors hope that it will continue to provide students with a chance to show their work. “It’s a great opportunity for people to come and see what is happening in the art department,” said Husted.
