Tuesday, September 21, was a great game for the 49er men. Scoring 7 goals to the one goal made by Lassen, this was a victory that the Yuba men are quite proud of. The 49er men led the game 5-1 by the end of the first half. Whitney Shimatsu scored the first goal for Yuba, followed by a goal netted by Nick Nelson, who kicked the ball in at point blank range.
Having a 2-0 lead, the Yuba men were pretty sure that they were going to have a great victory tucked in their belt. However, Lassen discontinue Yuba’s 2-0 lead, scoring one goal that was allowed due to a mistake by the goalie, Cody Bielen. Beilen was out defending when the Lassen player made the goal.
The last three goals of the first half were scored within a minute of each other. Tim Danna scored with an assist from Cole Morifuji, bringing the game to a 3-1 lead. A minute later, Luis Alejo brought the team to a 4-1 advantage. Only sixty more seconds passed before Edgar Mendoza netted the fifth goal with an assist from Alejo.
Early in the second half, the Yuba men missed three breakaway chances by Mike Ryman because he was alone each time. However, the men were able to score two more goals. Sophomore Dustin Broad kicked in another goal, bringing the 49ers to a 6-1 lead. The seventh goal was shot towards the end of the second half, bringing the victory of a 7-1 game.
Oscar Quezada, a fellow soccer player, commented, “Everyone had a great game and did really well. I was pleased with how well we did.” Mid-fielder Rene Villagras thought, “Everyone played well and we outhustled Lassen. We had more subs and they did not. We were able to keep it fresh out on the field.”
Coach Jason Spain said, “Although we started the game late, we made a great comeback. The team did really well.”
