Did you know that we have a competitive speech team? We do, and the team is very pleased to be presenting lively performances of short stories, poetry programs and drama for their audience. With the help of the speech coach, Suzanne Ruckle, they will host “Dramatic Interpretations of Literature: Reflections of Social Issues” as their second performance in Yuba College’s theater on Thursday, May 12th at 7:00 p.m.
Although it will be very entertaining, this is a fund raising event for them. The Speech team competes in both public speaking and drama events through the course of the semester, and they, like many other programs on campus, have had their budget cut due to the economic crisis that education has been enduring. Through fund raising events and donations to the Yuba College Foundation, the team has been able to continue competing on a limited basis. According to Coach Ruckle, “In order to compete in at least three tournaments a semester in Northern California, the team needs to raise up to $5000.” The team is working hard to meet their goal of qualifying for state and national competitions that occur in the spring.
She also states, “I don’t think the general public realizes that the speech team competes in at least 12 different categories, from traditional events such as informative and persuasive speeches, to scenes from plays and dramatic performances of short stories. The dramatic interpretations of literature need to be viewed to be appreciated. My students tell me they had no idea that viewing literature could be so entertaining!”
