The National Safety Council estimates that 28% of accidents are caused by the driver being distracted due to the use of a cell phone, for Driving While Talking or Driving While Texting (DWT). That is more than 1 in every 4th car on the road.
Are you going to be the next one?
No one believes that they will, yet the numbers continue to stay fairly consistent, in spite of most states passing legislation against both forms of DWT.
The Yuba City Police Department is attempting to encourage us drivers to
“Hang Up & Drive.”
Then, in case we aren’t sure if they REALLY mean “me???”, they add
“Yes, This Means You!”
All of us have seen someone do crazy things while driving and then look over and realize that they are talking on the phone. Or, worse yet, they have the phone laying on the steering wheel and using both thumbs to text message with someone.
Many drivers have been observed giving those people a friendly single digit greeting as they passed by them or a looooooooooooong gesture of their appreciation with the noise maker that is standard equipment on their vehicle.
Let’s ALL take the Yuba City Police Department’s encouragement to heart and save the pain and agony of an accident, or worse – of a loss of life, by getting off of our phones while driving. If the call/text is that important, take a few seconds to pull over into a SAFE parking space or parking lot before attempting to communicate with our phones.
