Earth Day

April 29, 2011 Heather Meunier Leave a Comment

Yuba College was the proud sponsor of, from what I hear, one of the only Earth Day events this side of Sacramento. The celebration lasted from 10-2 on April 21, and was rather different from the one hour event we usually hold. People from the community came to campus to share the beautiful day with our students, staff, and faculty, as we all learned ways to contribute to, and improve the future conditions of our planet.

There were several booths giving informational demonstrations, pamphlets, and sample products. Yuba’s newest club, The Green Futures Club, was there selling plants to help fund the renovations they are doing to renovate our old greenhouse on campus. A volunteer from the Marysville Community Gardens was selling tee shirts and the rights to an engraved brick to help fund the completion of what will, once finished, add beauty, culture, and horticultural awareness to our little town.

Many exciting activities took place on Earth Day, including a Velcro wall, sumo wrestling, a tree planting ceremony, poetry, reading to the children, “Earth Dogs” sold by Flavors Restaurant, free lemonade, and of course, the first debut of Dusty Niner. Dusty Niner is the new Yuba College mascot that was purchased by the Associated Students of Yuba College (ASYC) with their personal field trip money.

A big thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of Earth day. I encourage people to use this knowledge all year long. It takes determination and constant effort to make a difference, and every little bit helps. Remember, the small things do count and that they can help  keep Yuba College, Marysville, and the rest of our planet cleaner and more sustainable for future generations to enjoy.
