Yuba College faculty, staff and students will be helping the television station KVIE during the December 2003 Membership Drive by participating in a live phone bank on December 6 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. John Thoo, a Yuba College math professor, organized the college’s involvement in the phone bank. He recruited over 16 people from the college’s faculty, staff and students to participate. “It looked like a fun thing for us to do,” Thoo said.
Since KVIE is a non commercial station, it relies on donations from the community, government and corporations. On December 6, Thoo and many others will help KVIE by answering phones and entering data into computers.
Monica Kurowski, president of Associated Students of Yuba College, will be participating in the membership drive along with three other students. Kurowski said Thoo needed some people to help with the drive, so she thought it would be a good way to help the community and help the student population of Yuba College become more aware of ASYC.
“Nobody sees ASYC anywhere,” Kurowski said. She wanted people to know that ASYC is involved with Yuba College and in the community. Others are involved because of their support for public broadcasting and the opportunity to project a positive image of Yuba College.Brian Jukes, English professor, said, “It’s a worthy fund drive that I am proud to be part of. PBS offers excellent programming and quality news. And if we at Yuba College can show our support and simultaneously project a positive image of the college, then it’s an excellent opportunity.”
Yuba College students, staff and faculty can be seen on KVIE from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 6.
