Famous Poet comes to Yuba College

On Thursday, November 18, a famous poet came to Yuba College. Terry Moore, a 38-year old African-American male born and raised in Sacramento, CA, has been writing poems since he was in the military in his 20s. According to Moore, his talent was discovered in an unusual way. Apparently, he wrote a sarcastic poem to his ex-girlfriend, who loved the poem and showed it off to all her friends. She continued to flash it around until one grocery store posted a copy of his poem.

Currently, he works in the genetics department at U.C. Davis, but still has the time to let his talent flourish. Moore has sold 15 books, made 3 CDs, written plenty of poems and does over 70 performances a year. He has performed at the Temptations, a dance club in Illinois, and met Maya Angelou.

Moore won the Spoken Word Performer of the Year, Sounds of Soul Music Awards in 2001. He is also the host of the Guild Poetry Series, one of Sacramento’s premier poetry venues. This talented man is also the host of “Moore Time for Poetry Access Television Show,” featuring interviews, poetry, dance and gospel music. Moore is also the host of “The Show” at The Guild Theatre.

While on the Marysville campus, Moore performed a variety of poems for the captivated audience. Diversity was the key to the poems. They ranged from old school, to love poems, to comical poems to spiritual and revolutionary poems. After every poem, the audience was star struck at his amazing performance. His high energy, waving his hands, shouting out his verses, and literally getting into the faces of members of the audience, sent chills among the people.

While many students went to the meeting for extra credit, many found that it was a pleasure to meet Moore. He carried himself with dignity, was very enthusiastic about being at Yuba College and even had the audience yell out the chorus for a poem or two. Moore was full of energy, and hopefully some of the words of his poems will remain with the students.
