Thea Post has just about seen it all in her 16 year tenure as head coach of the Yuba College volleyball team. Last season brought one of the most potent offenses in team history.
“Last year we had one of the most powerful offenses ever,” Post recalls.
That would leave pretty big shoes for this season’s group to fill, and they do, just in a different way.
“This year we have the power, just not as much. What we lack in power, we make up for it in offensive smarts on the court,” Post said.
A large part of this year’s team is comprised of last season’s group, including last year’s Yuba College Athlete of the Year, Brianna Cardenas, outstanding middle blocker Cassie DeHaan, and outside hitter Vanessa Johnson.
Freshman players are also making an impact on the team this year.
Coach Post added, “We have some freshman doing a great job on defense. Sonia and Marcella Mitchell are doing a great job on the back line, and passing from the back court.”
Post acknowledged the fact that they are in a point of the schedule where they face some daunting competition.
“We’re progressing very well as a team, though we have a stretch of four very tough matches coming up on the schedule.”
Despite the daunting task ahead for the 49ers, Post remains confident of her team’s abilities.
“When we are passing off the serve, we can beat anyone.”
