The elected president of Yuba College’s student government, Christopher Mejia, resigned from office after the first meeting this semester. With other programs he is involved in, it became apparent that he would not be able to attend the meetings of the Associated Students of Yuba College. Due to Mejia’s resignation, Vice President Alice D’Ambrosio has been granted the office of President by the rest of the elected members. The vacancy of the Vice President position has been filled by the Senator Pro Tempore of the Senate, Marcus Bole. President Alice D’Ambrosio has dealt with the issue of other vacancies on the council by the consulting the ASYC constitution. According to D’Ambrosio, the constitution states that seats do not have to be filled unless members of the ASYC feel that they cannot function without them. The ASYC will not be reopening the seats on the council. Student government officers currently are: President, Alice D’Ambrosio; Vice President, Marcus Bole; Senator, James Hall; Senator, Todd Perkins; Activities Director, Maggie Reveles; and Communications Director, Stevie Escovedo.
The ASYC has set a number of goals that it would like to accomplish this year. Its goals include adding park benches and bulletin boards to the campus, changing the dates of ASYC elections and encouraging the college to offer at least one graduation-required class from each area during intercession.
The ASYC is also working on setting up events for homecoming. The activities are planned for the first week of October. On October, 1 the student government will sponsor karaoke during the noon hour; on October 2, members of various clubs on campus, dressed in college colors, will hand out flyers for the homecoming game and dance; on October 3, ASYC will sponsor a pep rally at noon; and on October 4, members of various clubs will hand out any remaining flyers. Another goal the ASYC is working hard to achieve is to increase student involvement in its government, according to Alice D’Ambrosio. Marcus Bole said, “It is difficult getting student involvement. Any student is welcome to come to our meetings, but no one shows up.” The ASYC meets every Thursday at noon in its office inside of the cafeteria.
