The first of two Accreditation Forums invited staff, faculty and students to an all-campus meeting, held at Yuba College on September 25th, 2012. There were several key points on the agenda as we prepare for an upcoming visit by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC). The Yuba College Chancellor, Dr. Douglas Houston detailed the accreditation process and his fundamental expectations.
The Commission will take a look at the last six years of planning, once again stressing honesty and commitment as the keys to success. Some colleges have incurred sanctions, which result when institutions create a system to meet budget but, by change or transfer of personnel, do not implement their own system. Although Yuba College has had some turnover in faculty personnel over the last six years, the tone of the meeting had a positive outlook, especially with respect to any possible sanction review. While finalizing the key points of accreditation, Dr.Houston said the process presents, “fortuitous opportunities” as long as we are “authentic and honest.” Chancellor Houston exudes an air of confidence and surety, personifying the commitment and drive necessary to achieve our blueprint for success.
Other speakers included Lisa Jensen-Martin, who is the interim Vice-President, and faculty member Brian Condrey, both of whom are Co-Chair Liaisons. Lisa Jensen-Martin followed Chancellor Houston on an upbeat note, as she held a jar of candy above her head, saying, “For Yuba College, the jar is always half full!” Rod Beilby, our acting President closed the meeting, by thanking everybody for attending, including several council members who were seated in the front.”
The next forum will be held October 12, 2012 from 12:00-12:50pm and everyone is encouraged to attend. The expected outcomes are to affirm planning, identify areas of improvement, establish a blueprint for improving Yuba College, and learn accreditation points, thereby making accreditation a part of our everyday dialogue.
The emphasis by our administrators, when the actual Comprehension Evaluation Visit takes place – from October 22, 2012 through October 25, 2012 – will be to tell our story to the ACCJC, keeping honesty and authenticity at the forefront of our plan and purpose, while proactively implementing our planning agenda, remembering that the site visit is not the finish line.
