Summer is almost here, time to blow the dust off those Tae Bo videos, pull the tennis shoes out from the back of the closet and start sweating to the oldies. Though it is important to stay healthy and take care of your body all year long, summer is the time of year young and old alike try to look their best.
“You gotta look good to wear a bathing suit!” said Robert Jory, a physical education teacher at Covillaud Elementary School in Marysville. Many gyms take advantage of this time to offer especially low membership rates and new classes.
Pro Fitness, on D Street in Marysville, offers month to month memberships starting at only $22 a month. The Racket Club in Yuba City charges $72 a month for the health club, and for an additional $10 you get access to basketball, racketball and tennis courts. Two women-only gyms locally offer a more female-friendly environment. Curves, in Marysville, offers memberships averaging $34 a month. Contours Express Women’s Gym’s monthly rates start at $29.
Most people work out in the evening, after work around 6 p.m., but trainers say that it is actually better to work out in the morning. When you exercise early, you have more energy for the rest of your day, and your body is filled with endorphins, which will help you keep a more positive attitude. When you work out in the evening your muscles are tired from the stress of everyday life.
Sheree Sandivol, a bartender at the Silver Dollar Saloon in Marysville, said, “For me exercising in the morning makes me feel healthy and sexy. When I’m happy, I treat others with a more positive attitude.”
Eating right and exercising is only half of the preparation most make when getting fit for summer. Many have a shared fear of that first venture to the water because of the blinding white gleam that often comes from behind the bathing suit.
“I hate the first swim of the season because everyone is blinding white,” said Jory.
Tanning is a must for most as they prepare for summer, whether they go to a tanning booth or bask in the sunlight from their own backyard.
Erin Schuy of Marysville summarized the same summer sentiment when she said, “Fat doesn’t look fat if it’s tan!”
Getting fit for summer for many is a must. Sandivol expressed the hopes of many young adults when she said, “I want to see a bunch of hot tan people running around this summer!”
