It’s 2008 and humans have informally flipped Mother Earth the bird. Onlookers couldn’t argue that the contemptuous response to thousands of years of devotion and comradeship wasn’t expected, given the unique human trend to be ungrateful. The planet Earth is not angry, however, it is only gigantic and sad. And top analysts, were they to analyze the situation, might speculate that our lack of sympathy for Earth will cause it to die of a broken heart. You see, people’s attitudes have an effect on their physical surroundings, and that effect could be a very bad one. If attitudes were like apples, then negative attitudes are like rotten apples which spread rottenness to all of the other apples near them. This force that has an effect on our general moods can be easily recognized if you think about when they are at their strongest. If you have ever been around someone that was really angry or been in a situation that was horribly awkward, then you know that there is something in the air that you can almost touch. It can make the atmosphere thicker and even seems to raise the temperature. To tie this back in with the Earth dying, then this sounds like global warming. Yes, because it is. We accept that our physical manhandling of the Earth is causing it great distress; there is no denying because we can actually see it. How about the emotional abuse though? That may be a little harder to both judge and justify. Can we recognize the Earth’s feelings? Are we from Mars and the Earth from Venus? Let us try an imaginative approach. Remember when we were all gooey and primordial? Probably not, so just imagine with me. We were all once a single anonymous nothing and, add lots of time and a few thumbs, now we are as we are. Still, basically, everything is now just a part of the same organism. That said, there is a certain harmony to the whole. Anyone can just feel that it is so if they tried. This organism is the living Earth. To stay in tranquil harmony with the whole is to be living life as it is meant to be lived. To watch the news or view people in the heat of their daily lives you wouldn’t think so. It is as if driving in traffic and cursing under your breathe or being glad when people look foolish are just a few of our favorite pastimes these days. This negativity is poisoning our harmony. We are voluntarily giving up on the fullness of life. It is like we are some kind of pole-vaulters of being negative that are getting better at it as time goes on, so we keep raising the higher and higher the bar to clear. This should concern people, right? If this was a gas leak in your home you’d want someone to warn you about it before it became dangerous. Well, this problem really is dangerous already. If only this negative thinking was something you could see then maybe we would think that it was a bigger concern. So, thinking of Ghostbusters II helps to explain this much better. For those of you fuzzy on the plot, here we go. We’ve got Vigo the Carpathian, a scary medieval warlock bro whose soul remains inactive in his creepy portrait for hundreds of years until ripe 1989. Other then being a “butch blonde” baby thief, Vigo’s main deal is that he collects the physical precipitate of bad vibes and malice into a river of negatively charged ectoplasmic slime that runs under New York City. The presence of this slime disrupts the natural spiritual balance and causes a huge number of spectral disturbances. The movie’s situation leaves the audience with the question, “Can the Ghostbusters quell the negative emotions feeding the otherworldly threat and stop the world from being slimed?”Paralleling this movie with our current situation-the slime is this energy that we are spreading to each other with our increasing negativity, we are Vigo the Despised, and we are also the Ghostbusters. This is getting tricky. How do we stop ourselves and end this unbalance? Rather than have any easy answers or quick solutions, the actual solution is to be aware of the problem and think about its real effects in the world you live in. Maybe we can find some value in the journey toward the achievement of a world more in sync, like Caine from Kung fu. To spoil the movie for you, the Ghostbusters win. They crash the Statue of Liberty through a negative energy barrier and into the roof of an art museum, to the backdrop of the cheers and jubilation of all New Yorkers. Then all of the people outside of the museum embrace each other and start singing songs of good cheer, the Ghostbusters strike while Vigo is weakened and distracted by the waves of good vibrations. Fingers crossed for us, though.
