The Yuba College Health Center will host a health fair at the Marysville campus on April 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will feature a blood and marrow drive, informative booths, free giveaways of Nokia phones and a live broadcast by KUBA.
Also available will be free blood pressure tests, hearing and diabetes screenings, as well as back massages, courtesy of businesses and organizations in the community will be rendered.
Cindy Snelgrove, Health Services registered nurse at Yuba College, believes that the health fair is a good way to familiarize students with different health services that are available in the area.
“I want college students to become consumers of health services so that they know where to go for the services they need,” she said of the numerous organizations that will be present at the event.
Snelgrove invited a wide variety of organizations to attend the event so that they may cater to the needs of all the students. Some students have confessed to Snelgrove that they do not have a method of transportation to get them to a doctor’s office and have a hard time seeking the proper treatment in case of checkups and ailments.
For this reason, Snelgrove invited Yuba Sutter Transit to the health fair. The company will be present to answer questions about their buses and minimal fees, which it makes available to residents of the community.
Planned Parenthood, Cingular Wireless, Sutter-Yuba Mental Health, Drug and Alcohol Services, Somerton Student Insurance Services and the Racquet and Health Club of Yuba City are also a few of the organizations that have been invited to attend.
According to Snelgrove, the blood and marrow drive will help people in the area in need of exact matches, such as a five-year old Yuba City girl who is suffering from Leukemia and is in need of a bone marrow transplant.
BloodSource will be hosting the drive in the Mat Room of the Physical Education building from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
It is recommended that those wishing to participate in donating blood meet a minimum weight standard of 110 pounds., be generally healthy, eat and drink plenty of fluids and present a donor card or photo Id. Snacks will be provided and a free t-shirt will be given to all participants.
Students are encouraged to take advantage of the services offered on this day as a good outcome will ensure that the fair continues to be held in future years. For any questions, contact your Health Services Nurse at: (530) 741-6818 or at csnelgro@yccd.edu.
