The Green Futures Club (GFC) is a student-led group of volunteers inspired by the former Green Futures Project Team (GFPT) and the Earth Explorers Club, which was started by Dr. Betsey Julian, former chairperson of the GFPT. In the few short weeks since receiving their charter, the members have picked up where the former groups left off in reducing Yuba College’s carbon footprint.
Brandon Hurd, founder and president of GFC explains, “We will be encouraging environmental awareness and sustainability. We hope to get students on board to promote the need for more Natural Science programs on campus such as Ecology, Plant Science, and Agriculture.”
The club hosts workdays to clean and renovate the old greenhouse as well as renew the vegetable garden out by the 700 building that was started by the GFPT. Many seeds currently being used were donated to the club by our sister school, Woodland Community College, as well as from local businesses. Plants were sold on Earth Day to help fund the renovations.
Brian Condrey, English professor and Faculty Advisor for the GFC believes an overlooked, neglected old greenhouse or barren piece of land could be the key to improving conditions of the school. He tells me, “Renovating opens up all sorts of possibilities by creating a resource for learning opportunities. I love the enthusiasm of this group and their ability to get things done. It’s often hard to maintain the momentum and support to implement ideas like this, but Brandon’s ability to network and motivate people is impressive. He makes things happen and, without people working hard towards a common goal, changes like this never occur.”
The club has received encouragement from staff, faculty and students. If you are interested in participating or would like more information, email Brandon at bhurdtoo@gmail.com or Professor Condrey at bcondrey@yccd.edu and you can also check out their Facebook page.
