The Yuba College music department has several upcoming events for the enjoyment of students and the community.
Beginning November 5 at the Yuba College theatre, the Symphonic Band and Jazz Ensemble directed by Dr. Allan Miller will perform during the Autumn Instrumental concert. His students will be playing music from classical literature.
Later that month, Yuba College students and faculty will play classical guitar favorites and other music at a noon recital on November 9. The recital, held in the Yuba College theatre, will be directed by Robert Matthews, Yuba College music professor.
December 3 will bring the Winter Instrumental and the delightful sounds of holiday music to the Yuba College theater. The Symphony and Jazz Ensemble will feature famous classics and traditional holiday music.
The Annual Christmas Scholarship Concert will be performed on December 7 and 9 by Yuba College Master Chorale, directed by Joaquina Johnson. The chorale, held in the Yuba College theatre, will provide beautiful holiday music for all to enjoy.
The last concert of the semester will be held on December 14 in the Yuba College theater. Yuba College guitar students and faculty will perform at this noon recital. When asked about the value of a music program at Yuba College, Matthews replied, “I believe that the general curriculum needs music. Music helps us learn, including S.A.T. scores and logical skills.”
“Music is a language without words,” contined Matthews. “It can be very important when communicating and understanding someone. Music is emotion without words.” Miller has been working on what pieces he and his students will be playing at the concerts, but as of yet they are not put together.
The students have been working hard to make their concerts memorable.Yuko McWhorter, a music major, enjoys performing at Yuba College. “The music department is wonderful,” said McWhorter. “We have two great teachers. Dr. Matthews has given me great guidence in becoming a good musician.”
As of yet there is no voice or piano teacher at Yuba College. So music majors have had to look elsewhere for their field of study.
“In the future we will hopefully be able to get voice and piano back,” said McWhorter.Matthews believes that there will be a new voice teacher hired in the fall of 2005.Right now the students and Matthews are working on five pieces for the concerts.
Miller said, “I am real excited about the upcoming season. I believe it will be a fun and educational experience.”
The music department hopes that students and community members can get out to hear the beautiful music that the Yuba College students and staff have put together.
