Hot Cars

 The 2nd Annual Hot Nights Cool Cars was held in Olivehurst on Saturday, August 20. The forty-seven motorized entries included Harley Davidsons; Corvettes; Mustangs; Hot Rods; Fords, Chevrolets, Dodges, Desoto; Fairlane; Malibu; pickups, a Shelby Cobra and the Art-O-Mobile (1967 Checker Marathon Cab).

This event is the brainchild of Dennise Burbank, who was looking for a venue that the whole family could participate in, and to introduce Olivehurst to its neighbors.

Dale Skinner, a local fireman, won Best Motorcycle for his 2000 Harley Davidson Road King. With its custom paint, metal flames on the wheels and fire department badges locate on each side of the bike; it is a tribute to all firefighters.

The Best In Show and People’s Choice award went to Virgil Willard for his 1965 Ford Mustang.

Karl Cozad, when asked why he participates in classic car shows he said that he enjoys nostalgia. He went on to say that older vehicles had their own personalities, which you can certainly see when you attend these shows. Karl’s 1931 Ford Hot Rod (classified Model A) was a Louver Louie show car which was built in the 1960’s and has a 59 Chevy rear end. His second entry, 1997 Harley Davidson Heritage Springer, was modeled after the 1948 Springer. Only 1500 of the Springers were produced.

In competition with Karl was his wife, Cheryl Cozad, who brought her 1991 ZR1 Corvette. This model Corvette’s engine was designed by Lotus and was built to compete on the European racing circuit. Cheryl stated she loves these events, “It’s fun, it’s cool”. They both enjoy meeting all the people who come.

Terry Bjurstrom, one of the judges, exhibited his 1939 Chevy Hot Rod with a nova front clip and has a 400 small block engine.

Terry suggested all those interested in attending car shows and events check the Internet for car shows in northern California for the exact dates and times of all forthcoming shows. Every Friday night owners bring their classic vehicles to the Yuba City Ihop.

Vendors provided food, art and entertainment. A martial arts demonstration was given by Tiger Eye Family Martial Arts students. They teach a variety of martial art styles to anyone between 5 and 99 years of age. Dave, one of the instructors said lessons will be given free if you’re over 99 and would like to learn. Anyone, including those with disabilities can learn martial arts. According to Shannon Levesque (co-owner) “nobody sits on the bench”. Martial arts is a family affair.

Artist Inga Price attended with her sculptures, paintings and other forms of art. She welds, paints and sews using recycle materials creating a one of a kind work of art. One of her pieces can be see on campus, the sign for Flavors. She will be doing a presentation of ideas and sketch for cosplay on October 8th at The Laughing Lotus Event Center in Marysville.
