In the swing of things

Golf is a sport that is growing more and more world wide, but many people are still not interested in it. Golf is definitely becoming very popular in Northern California and especially in the Yuba-Sutter area. The Yuba-Sutter area has some very beautiful golf courses within a 25 mile radius and they are all priced so anyone can play them. But people in this area are not taking advantage of the beautiful and cheap golf courses that are available for them to play.

Compared to golf courses in Sacramento and the Bay Area, our local courses are similar in quality, but much cheaper in prices. Some courses in the Yuba City/Marysville area are only about $25 for a round of 18 holes.

Plumas Lake, Southridge and Mallard Lake are three great courses that you can play for $25 or less. Plumas Lake and Southridge are two great 18 hole public courses that anyone in the area can play. They both have the same beautiful countryside that courses in Sacramento and the Bay Area have, but they cost about half the price. Many people say that it costs too much money to play a few hours of golf. But our area is very privileged to have such great golf courses that are much cheaper than other courses.

In Sacramento, one round of golf costs anywhere from $50-200, depending on where you go. And even farther south, courses in the Bay Area such as Pebble Beach costs upwards of $300 for 18 holes of golf. These courses in the Bay Area also require you to reserve a tee time up to one month in advance, while our local courses do not require any advance reservations. If you are in the mood to play some golf, you can just drive to any local course and play right away.

There are also some great courses that are just a short drive away. There are two or three great courses in Oroville and even more in Chico that are just a one-hour drive or less away. There is also a great private club right down the street from Yuba College called Peach Tree Golf Club, where you can become a member and use many of their wonderful facilities including 18 holes of great golf.

For those of you who have never played golf, or are just beginners, most of these courses offer lessons but they can be very costly. One excellent way for a beginner to learn to play golf is by taking one of the great classes that are offered at Yuba College. There are two different types of golf classes that are offered here at the college.

There is one class for total beginners, or one for more advanced players. The beginner class is anywhere from .5 units to 1.5 units. You will pay no more than $20 for a few months worth of lessons, when it would cost at least $20 per hour to take lessons from a professional at one of the local courses. The golf classes are offered at all times during the day and can be taken at a number of locations. They can be taken right here at Yuba College, at a local golf course, or out on Beale Air Force Base.

Having personally taken both of these classes, I recommend them for anyone interested in golf. They are a great, inexpensive way for someone to learn to play golf, or for a more experienced player to get some good practice. With these great classes and all of our beautiful golf courses in the area, there is no excuse for people not get out and enjoy the great game of golf. Perhaps we should take advantage of the good golf in our area, before it is gone.
