Yuba College student most likely will not have a college nurse to serve the Woodland, Clearlake, and Marysville campuses until mid October or later. Kevin Trutna Associate Dean of Engineering, Science, Mathematics, and Agriculture at Yuba College, and Paul Mendoza Vice President of Student Services will be going to the board on the 1st of October with the name of the nurse that they feel is qualified for the position. Sara Harris, Yuba College’s nurse of 30 years, retired last spring and left the district deciding whether to hire another faculty member as a nurse or to create a new classified position.
Kevin Trutna has established that the position of College Health Services Nurse will be a classified position.
“The nurse will be a classified position because it allows flexibility in the days and times. It also allows for the students in the nursing program to obtain TB testing, and obtain the CPR cards that are required before going into the nursing program, and assist those on sports teams to get there physicals and immunizations.” Says Trutna. It is also in the works to have the student nurses do a rotation with the nurse to learn how to give shots, blood pressure, and help with health education programs.
The nurse will rotate her time between the Woodland, Clearlake, and Marysville campuses. The time and days she will be at the Yuba College is still being determined. She will provide Health information on a variety of diseases and illnesses including AIDS awareness, hepatitis, diabetes, and sexually transmitted diseases. She will also give referrals to those students who need them.
“I am also hoping that there will be a health services website for the students so that they can get information on tobacco awareness, pregnancy, and other subjects. Said Betty Bonner Director of Nursing. The College Health Services nurse will not be on hand to administer cough drops, give out band aids, or to give any medicine. Those students that get hurt on campus or have an emergency must go to the campus police for assistance.
“The police officers at this time are not EMT qualified, but I believe that our officers should upgrade there skills,” said Chief Wilkinson of the Yuba College campus police.
