It’s All About the Money

Recording artist Nick Meyer takes a walk out into the back yard of his Yuba City home, and into the lavish recording studio he has built behind his Northern California abode. The former “St. Nick” is back at it once again, preparing his third solo LP, and the work ethic can be felt throughout the building. It’s palpable. One could cut it with a knife. While his local musical peers are spending time checking emails, window shopping at the mall, and wasting useful time in general, the 30-year old veteran of the Yuba-Sutter hip hop scene delves into his artform the way a doctor delves into a medical book.

While his past albums have led to a level of success that would impress, if not dwarf, those he grew up surrounded by, his passion for the business drives him to achieve even more. Past collaborations with platinum recording artists the likes of E-40 and T-Pain have yet to satisfy his appetite, but rather they have whet the pallet for what he considers to be the real entree.

Not content going at it alone, he has summoned a round table of local artists with a wealth of knowledge, and a catalog of projects as thick as a dictionary. The list includes a vast variety of entertainers, from the R&B croonings of Yuba City’s Eli Rey, to the vocal beat boxes and electronic synthesis of Roseville’s Beau Garcia, to the grimy underground musings of San Francisco’s Doctor Scott. For Meyer, this project can’t stop at a label such as “pretty good,” or even “excellent,” for that matter. This one must entail perfection.

It’s been over ten years since his quest to reach the top began, and for many just like him along the way, the road has been full of ups and downs, bumps and bruises, flashes of hot and cold. Undeterred, Meyer demands the highest quality form of music from himself and the camp he has assembled. For the Yuba-Sutter rap veteran, he maintains that 2015 will be his year.
