Kite Runner’ launches tradition

February 20, 2007 Staff Leave a Comment

Earlier this semester you might have seen a book displayed in the 100 building case. The display contained a book called “The Kite Runner” with some basic information about the book. This is all part of a new tradition of Woodland College professors introducing a new book to students each semester. Students in four classes are assigned to read the book.

Eight professors met before this semester, including one math and one science teacher, to decide which book to use. They are deciding now on the book for next spring.

I spoke with Dena Martin, campus librarian, about the plans for the rest of the semester. She is working on getting a speaker for a lecture session about Islam. She has made other plans to hold an Afghani food and culture day. For later on in the semester, after the weather gets a bit better, there are plans for a kite decoration contest. There should even be time to see if your masterpieces will actually fly.

For those not in one of the four classes that were assigned to read the “The Kite Runner,” Woodland professors recommend that you read it anyway. There are plans for an open book discussion in the library, to be posted soon, and everyone is invited. These events will be going on around campus through the end of the semester.

Printed program and more flyers will be coming soon.
