When asked to discuss her beautiful creations, retired Yuba College adjunct instructor Cindy Gaven’s voice fills with excitement, “I took a printmaking class from Sara Sealander and just had a ball.” On display in the 100A building through February were twelve of Gaven’s paintings. Her works included vibrant flowers, peaceful windowsills, and playful, colorful shapes. “I’ve been painting for about ten years,” she explained, “and I like watercolor the best because it’s just so much easier to control.”
Gaven, who taught adult basic education at Yuba Sutter Mental Health, until she retired last year, decided to take a printmaking class from Art Professor Sara Sealander, last fall and learned many new watercolor painting techniques.
The techniques required her to incorporate new materials, including one piece, which required painting on a linoleum block. Also included were hand-tinted collagraphs and a black and white dypoint done on a plexiglass plate.
“It’s really important that anyone, art major or not, take an art class. Sara (Sealander) is so fun to work with. I encourage everyone to take some kind of art appreciation class,” she explained. “The arts are so important.”
