Nursing education all over the United States has undergone tremendous changes in recent years in order to better prepare the nurses of tomorrow. The Associate Degree Nursing program at Yuba College is undergoing a few changes as well.
The most beneficial change for nursing students is the new innovative lab built specifically for the program because the use of technology is an integral part of nursing.
The new simulation suite provides a space that is identical to a real clinic or hospital. It enhances nursing skills by utilizing high-fidelity mannequins which offers a scenario for hands-on practice.
The new skills lab alsoprovides extra hands-on training with the help and support from part-time RN instructional assistants.
In addition, a new computer lab was incorporated to support online learning for nursing students.
The Nursing Academic Success program is also there to provide resourceful support and guidance to all nursing and pre-nursing students.
The new lab was built to meet the needs of new technology, but pre-nursing students should be aware of the changes that were also made to the admission process. Estimated to begin the academic year of 2012-2013, the nursing program is anticipating a lottery system, a form of admission process system that randomizes all applicants, in this case, by the Yuba College Research Department Personnel. The lottery system does not affect current nursing students or students currently on the wait list.
However, it does affect pre-nursing students who have not met all of their prerequisites. On that note, choosing to adopt the lottery system does not make the nursing program any less competitive even though the lottery system tends to favor diversity over actual merit because your admission still heavily relies on the Chancellor’s Formula for Success and passing the TEAS or HESI pre-entrance examination.
Pre-nursing students should also beaware of a prerequisite class called pathophysiology, also known as nursing 36. This class must be completed prior to the admission process and suggested to be taken near admission.
Pharmacology, also known as nursing 26, can be taken during the nursing program, but has to be completed prior to the second semester. Students are advised to take this class as soon as possible because waiting until the first semester can cause scheduling conflict that can ultimately lead to being dropped and having to reapply for the nursing program.
Nursing is a blend of science, technology and compassion. Science and technology are always evolving due to new discoveries and advances. Yuba College continues to strive to bring the most up to date knowledge and technology to its nursing students of yesterday, today and tomorrow.
