Men’s hoops off to promising start

December 6, 2002 Staff Leave a Comment

The Yuba College 49ers male basketball team is off to a very promising start this season including a blowout win against Monterey Peninsula. The 49ers have most of last season’s successful team returning along with some skilled freshman players. Point guard Kenny Smith, guards Brett Ost and Matt Otten, and forwards James Reed and Fortrell Wallace are returning for their sophomore seasons.

Kenny Smith brings consistent point guard play, while Brett Ost and Matt Otten bring some lights out shooting. The 49ers will be missing the services of street baller Chad Weaton and Woodland High graduate Matt Smith because both players were sophomores last season.

The 49ers have some good freshman this season that will step in nicely. Marysville High School star Mychael Henry should provide some nice backup point guard play behind Kenny Smith. Joining Henry is another star freshman player Mark Schmidt, who is a 6-foot-9 forward from Rocklin. Schmidt has already looked impressive this season, especially in a win against Monterey Peninsula. Schmidt finished with 17 points, nine rebounds, and four blocks. He shot 100% from both the field and the free throw line.

For his fine performances this season, Schmidt was named Yuba College Male athlete of the week this past week. If Henry and Schmidt continue to improve this season, than the 49ers can only improve on last season’s success. The 49ers are returning with most of their starting lineup this season, and have recruited some great freshman. This season looks to be very successful for the 49ers Men’s Basketball team.
