Men’s soccer hopes to end season on a positive note

November 17, 2006 Staff Leave a Comment

With one game left in the season, Yuba College’s men’s soccer has won five games, had three ties and suffered three losses. Coach Dossy attributed their unsuccessful season to the majority of his team being new. The majority of the team were freshman, and most of them started.

Dossy said that the freshman were shocked at the speed and aggression of their competition. Aurelio Guzman, freshman player, said their opponents were more aggressive and were more prepared physically with more experience.

Confidence, however, was not an issue. Yuba’s soccer team never let anything bring down their spirit.

“I’m actually mad at them because they are too confident,” explained Dossy.

The coach also revealed that about 80 percent of this year’s team will be returning next year, which will also make a big difference. “Most of the starters are freshman,” Dossy said. “Most of them are doing fine in school to be eligible for next year.”

Being a second year player allows more confidence on the field, and with a large number of the team returning, their chemistry should already be established. Instead of having nine or ten freshman starters, Yuba’s soccer team will have nine or ten experienced, college level starting players next year. “It won’t take us as long to get into the game,” Dossy predicted.

Dossy said that nothing about this season was disappointing; they just weren’t as successful as they wanted to be.

If there could be one improvement to their team, Guzman said he would say it was attitude. “We need attitude to play at the same level we played some of our games,” he said.

As for their last game of the season, Dossy hopes for a win. “We need to win. We need to finish the season on a positive note.”

Guzman agreed stating, “We still have the possibility to finish in second place.” Dossy made it clear that their last game of this season would also be like the first game of next season.
