Both the men’s and women’s soccer teams finished the season with road losses on November 11 having already qualified for the playoffs.The men’s team yielded a 4-1 loss to Modesto on November 11 and finished the season fourth in the conference with a record of 10-5-2 in the Bay Valley Conference, 10-5-3 overall.
Yuba had just scored a big win on November 6, in which the 49ers broke Santa Rosa’s six-year home-game winning streak in a highly physical match.
Injuries and sickness devastated the team and contributed to the loss to Modesto, assistant coach Bart Morefield said. “One of our best defenders got injured early on and we just had no depth as defenders,” he said.
The 49ers had their hands full against the Pirates’ All-American, Marco Ramirez, who scored three goals in the first half. Morefield said that their defense could not adjust as Modesto continually switched their point of attack. Broad scored the only goal for Yuba off a pass from Rocky Otsuka in the first half.
Morefield said the men’s team would likely be seeded ninth in the playoffs.
The women’s team also lost on November 11, falling 3-1 to Sierra to end an otherwise successful season. They finished third in the conference with a record of 12-4 in the BVC, 13-5-1 overall.
Sierra’s height advantage helped them score some goals with headers past the goalie, assistant coach Matt Nelson said. “We kept the ball on their side most of the game, but we couldn’t finish,” Nelson said. Mikailia Freitas scored the only goal for Yuba.
As for the playoffs, head coach Jason Spain attended meetings last week to discuss the standings and will be able to announce the playoff schedule soon.
Morefield said the women would probably be seeded ninth in conference as well.
