Mixing it up Variety Style

Daniel Kurtz was searching for a “Heart Of Gold” while Brian Vick strummed it up on the guitar. Jim Fleenor sent out some poetic messages about matches and drunk driving. Don’t play with matches and don’t drink and drive. Just don’t do it. Mey Saechao took the audience to a virtual world with her Final Fantasy 5 piece on piano. One audience member exclaimed, “That was epic.” Fleenor took us “Back InThe Day” with his poem, while Robert Mathews took us back with his rendition of the musical master minds of the old Atari game Pong. Alina Shelton did a skit that took the audience from a backwards Wonderland to Always Always Land in search of the horrible present. Some of the audience members may still be there trying to find their way back through those twisted puzzles to return to the real present. Thao Nguyen tried not to “Fall for You,” while Saechao keyed it up on piano. Mathews schooled the audience on the creation of the ukulele: “If you wash your guitar in hot water this it what it becomes.” Then Mathews, Connie Brechlin, and Steve Ruble took the audience to a place where “All You Need Is Love” with the musical splendor of the ukulele: two sisters, Brynne and Geniel Capps, who clearly must have time warped here somehow, sang some lovely duets about Green Sleeves, Ivory Towers, and Killing The Blues. They were three very colorful pieces. Last but not least, three nerds appeared and started break dancing. Christian Jackson, Thomas Ignacio, and Zach Hargis made nerds really appealing with their flavorful, energetic moves. Then Mathews tried to get an encore with his moves. Now that was a whole lot of randomness, but hey, it’s called a variety show for a reason.

The idea for the variety show was thought of seven years ago by a man named Israel Gonzales. Many thanks to him for spicing up the Yuba College campus. Can he get a woot-woot?
